Picklesnot Design

Whimsical Name.

What’s in a name? Apparently a lot. When I first began thinking about starting my own business in the Fall of 2008 to help support my ever-growing yarn habit there was only one thing I knew. I had the perfect little “mascot”.

Several years earlier I was gifted a portrait of a little dragon by the very talented Sarah Bonczek-Simpson. (She’s had artwork featured on the web series The Guild!) I was immediately enamored with the little guy and wanted to know if he had a name. (All dragons have names.) When I asked Sarah about the dragon’s name her immediate response was, “Picklesnot.” I admit I raised an eyebrow at first, but I didn’t question the name. The little dragon holding a pearl, wearing bangles on his neck and ears, looking out from his picture with large almost sad eyes, became a fixture on the wall in a place of honor amongst the artwork…

The moment I decided to start my business I contacted Sarah to make sure she was alright with my using the image in this manner. She was. My next step was deciding on a name. This took much longer than you think. Every name I came up with was either used by another person (company) or I didn’t like it enough. Finally Matt, my husband, looked at me and said, “You should just name it Picklesnot. You will always get questions.” Of course I shook my head in denial. But eventually I caved and added Design to the name.

True to Matt’s words I’ve been getting questions about Picklesnot Design ever since. Usually the first question is how do you pronounce it [Pickle - Snot] and then what do I do, which of course, leads to a discussion on Fibre Arts.

Serious Style.

My original focus for Picklesnot Design was simply crocheted accessories like hats, fingerless gloves and patterns. They were simple and elegant. I have a penchant for making things that could have been worn in various periods (ex. Medieval, Renaissance, Steam-punk). As I learned more about the different yarns available for me to play with I began to expand my craft. I took up Spindle spinning, then toyed with the idea of dyeing yarn. I was given a knitting machine for Christmas because I wanted to learn how to knit cables but didn’t trust my ability to handknit. Let’s just say that Matt was relieved when I finally picked up a pair of pointy sticks and relearned how to handknit. Next on my list is to try my hand at weaving… I have become a Fibre Arts Enthusiast.

Even with all my enthusiasm for the Fibre Arts, I do, like many Crafters, get sidetracked on occasion by something else. A shiny bauble, a pretty stone, a brilliant piece of etched glass. I like exploring these outlets because nine times out of ten they will inspire something else I can accomplish with fibre.

As of Fall 2011 Picklesnot Design will begin offering an assortment of fibre arts related items including patterns and custom designs as well as other crafty ideas.
