The Telling Of The Tale

July 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Here is the current rundown of the different stories I am working on:

  1. Black Orchid Consortium
  2. Life In The Fast Lane
  3. Nothing More Than Feelings
  4. Pulse
  5. Somewhere In Between
  6. Storms In The Black
  7. The Witching Hour
  8. When Dealing With The Past Use Rope
  9. Dollhouse – Charlie

Some of these stories will be familiar, some of them I may have mentioned only in passing. All of them are being written over at Fractured Imagination. Yes, it is a site similiar to E! – smaller and more…intimate. No, not all of the stories are erotic in nature. Sure there are some steamy scenes, but it’s not the bulk of their content.  And yes, all of the stories are collaborative works of fiction.

Other than the obvious one in the list, could you tell which ones are fan-fiction?

There has always been some contention as to what actually constitutes fan fiction.  My views on what constitutes fan-fiction are not necessarily the same as yours. My technical definition of fan-fiction is the writing of a story that contains characters not of my own creation (or that of my writing partners) as a main character.  Dictionary.com supports this by defining fan-fiction as:

1. fiction written by fans of a TV series, movie, etc., using existing characters and situations to develop new plots.

Just by going with that definition I haven’t been writing any fan-fiction at all. But if I we take  a look at the Wikipedia definition (yeah, yeah I know) it states that:

Fan fiction (alternately referred to as fanfiction, fanfic, FF, or fic) is a broadly-defined term used to describe stories about characters or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creator.

Given that definition there are 6 total stories on the list that could be considered fan-fiction simply because of their setting.  I’ve been writing fan-fiction for rpg worlds (Exalted, World Of Darkness), TV shows (Firefly, Dollhouse), and book series (Dark-hunter). And while the settings are not my own the plots and the characters are.

More often then not, these stories end up as alternative universes and help me flesh-out ideas that I do turn into original stories.  Either way, a story is told and it’s the telling of the tale that really matters.

[For thems that are curious - 2,3,5,6,8 and 9 are the fan-fic pieces.]

Cry Tears of Joy

May 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if I ever mentioned where I got the name for Loose Ends from…if I haven’t shame on me. The name of the blog comes from a song by Imogen Heap. She is what most folks would consider an electronica artist. I have seen her in concert 3 times so far and have been waiting patiently for her new album to come out.

Even if you do not like electronica music, please take a moment to watch this video. It’s long…really long as a matter of fact (roughly 27 minutes). But once you start it I promise you won’t be sorry. During the month of April Immy did some recordings in Maui while she was trying to finish up her next album. This is the first of 4 sessions. (I will not be posting the others.) It’s absolutely breathtaking.

I’m not posting this video for it’s visual content, I am posting it for the audio content. I would pay to be able to have this on my ipod or on itunes. If you want to listen to the other 3 sessions go here.

Goodbye 2008… Hello 2009…

December 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

What happend in 2008 at Loose Ends:

  • 152 posts were written, averaging roughly 13 posts per month. (That’s figured mathematically-as we all know that I didn’t write thirteen posts every month)
  • I wrote up 14 book reviews. Several of them were books on the Best Seller list for 2008.
  • Went through a burn out and took some time off from writing.
  • Managed to eek through Nanowrimo 2008.

Keeping Me In The Dark

Sascha Illiavanivich (It’s a mouthful I know) has a story. It’s a story that spans decades…She is a child of myth and legends. This is a tiny glimpse into what her life was like…

I am considering writing her story in full for Nanowrimo 2008.

Welcome to the Year 2008

January 2, 2008 · 2 Comments

So I have a plan. It starts with one word. Discipline.

I will endeavor to write 1000-1200 words every day. Starting tomorrow. Yup. That’s right. Today I wasted away with crocheting, video games, and paying a lot of attention to Henry-my cat. I haven’t really looked at my laptop since the 27th of December (discounting the post last night) and it was just what I needed to regain some perspective and to look at my goals for this bright and shiny new year. Look for more from me tomorrow.

Last Post In The Year 2007

January 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Year that was 2007:

This year was the year of finding renewed spirit for my writing. It has taken me several years to reach this level. Now when someone asks me what I do I say: “I write.” And I say it with pride and without qualifications.
No, I have not sold any of the stories I have written. But that didn’t matter to me this year. It was more important to look at what I needed to do to make myself happy.

So what are my “New Year’s Resolutions” for 2008?

Well, this year I will continue to work on the revisions of White Roses and Red Roses. The search for an agent will commence once the first re-writes are done. Taking a page from Jennifer Pelland, I am going to write 1 short story per month. There is also the continuation of The Roses Trilogy to plot and write. I will be working to see something of mine in print by the end of 2008 (or at least be able to say that there will be something in print) – be it fiction or technical writing. Of course continue to blog here.

Of course life will happen in between all that planned writing and it will be a challenge to keep myself on track.

For now I bid 2007 a fond farewell.

Happy Holidays

December 23, 2007 · 1 Comment

I’d like to say that I will be posting over Christmas, but the truth is that I won’t be anywhere near a computer. So I will say Happy Holidays to everyone now. And I hope to be back by Wednesday.
Keep warm if it’s snowing. Cool if it’s hot. And for those that have had rain recently-dry.

A little smile, a word of cheer, A bit of love from someone near, A little gift from one held dear, Best wishes for the coming year… These make a Merry Christmas!

See everyone in a few days!
